The research group of the "Bioactive Heterocycles Synthesis" laboratory focuses mainly on the development (design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation) of 5-HT1A and 5-HT6 receptor antagonists as potential agents against obesity, cancer, anxiety, depression and Alzheimer’s disease, among others ailments. To carry out these objectives we collaborate with researchers of the Department of Pharmacy and other academic centers, studying permeability and solubility properties, and determining the molecules’ biopharmaceutical profile, with the aim of selecting those that possess suitable drug-like properties.

We also have collaborations with faculty from UC and other universities, with whom we evaluate the molecules in terms of activity and toxicity in in vivo models such as vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a pharmacologically relevant approach to higher animal models.

A further research line focuses on the development of synthetic methodology of biologically relevant heterocycles such as indazole, indole and azaindole. To this end we have established a close collaboration with a research group in the Université de Caen Normandie where our group’s PhD students can carry out their research stay.

As secondary research lines we collaborate with a group of the Faculty of Medicine of our University in the development of inhibitors of 11β-HSD1 for the treatment of hypertension and metabolic syndrome.
Specifically, we perform the synthesis of these compounds. Lastly, a line of collaborative research is maintained with a group from the Adolfo Ibañez University where we carry out the structural elucidation of bacterial metabolites of environmentally relevant species.
